ProTools|LE & ProTools|TDM systems - what's the difference? Essentially the fundamental difference is that Digidesign's entry-level LE (or lite systems) are non-expandable and are limited by the processing abilities of the host computer system and the provided features of the Digidesign I/O box utilised. With a ProTools|TDM based-system, such as ProTools|HD, advanced DSP-powered 64-bit PCI cards are used to enhance the capabilities of the host computer and enable various directions of expandability. Multiple HD cards can be used in conjunction to provide superior processing capabilities, whilst multiple interfaces can be utilised for enhanced I/O functionality. This technology allows for the implementation of up to seven HD cards for unprecedented signal processing, unbelievably complex mix configurations, high track counts of up to 192 simultaneous tracks, and high-definition sample rate support all the way up to 192kHz at 24-bit. The use of multiple HD interfaces further allows for a multitude of both analogue and digital I/O configurations to be achieved through the use of up to six interfaces providing a maximum of 96 simultaneous I/O channels.
